Advanced silazane based polymer and ceramic coatings

Dr. Motz is since 1996 at University of Bayreuth as Senior Scientist. Currently he works as an Assistant Professor at the Chair of Ceramic Materials Engineering at the Department of Engineering Science at University of Bayreuth, Germany (since 2011). He also worked as a Consultant for Clariant AG (2007-2010), BioCer GmbH (2000-2007), and Fraunhofer Society (2011-2013). He received his Diploma in Chemistry in 1989 from University of Leipzig, Germany (1989) and Ph.D. (1995) from University of Stuttgart, Germany.

His research is at the intersection of materials science and chemistry. Since taking over the leadership of the precursor ceramic group in 1999, which was continuously expanded in the following years regarding staff as well as research topics. Initially the activities were focused on fundamental research on the synthesis of new preceramic SiCN-based polymers their characterization and conversion to ceramics. Especially for potential applications it was important to clarify the correlation between architecture of the precursor and the properties of the resulting ceramics. Dr. Motz is an author of more than 130 peer-reviewed publications and patents, he presented 65 Invited or Keynote Lectures.

Different research activities have been launched in the following years with the intention to implement the results of basic research in application-oriented projects, often by involving the industry. Current research activities are mainly focused on: (1) Synthesis of novel, metal-containing SiCN-Precursors; (2) Transfer of the precursor synthesis to an industrial scale; (3) Tailoring of the precursor properties regarding required properties; (4) Development of ceramic SiCN-fibres; (5) Polymer and ceramic silazane-based coatings ; (6) Porous and catalytic active precursor-based ceramics; (7) Hybrid polymers (organic/inorganic); (8) Ceramic/ceramic and ceramic/metal compounds.

Dr. Motz is member of the American Ceramic Society (ACerS) as well as of the German Ceramic Society (DKG) via the chair. He acts as a reviewer for DFG, NSF, ANR, Industry, and is Associate Editor of the journals Materials, Coatings, Nanomaterials and Nanotechnology, and Frontiers in Materials.
